那《飞越彩虹》的歌声伴随着一代又一代的儿童在纯真和童趣中成长。每一句台词、每一个音符、每一样道具都已成为电影史的瑰宝。现代科技大可以把特技做得更真,但谁能复制朱迪·加兰的歌声?本片曾有一个1925年的无声版,还有一个1978年的黑人版(The Wiz),由戴安娜·罗斯和迈克尔·杰克逊主演,场景搬到了纽约,但最难容忍的是没有采用经典版的歌曲。
为了拍摄本片,米高梅不但购买了莱曼·弗兰克·鲍姆(L。 Frank Baum)小说的改编权,还取得了1902年同名音乐剧的改编权,影片中的故事情节由小说和音乐剧共同改编而成。其中米高梅为取得小说的改编权支付了75000美元,在当时可谓登峰造极。
本片先后由5位导演接手,第一位是理查德·托普(Richard Thorpe),他只拍摄了两周,所有镜头都未出现在最终版本的影片中;第二位是乔治·丘克(George Cukor),他没拍摄任何画面,只是调整了朱迪·加兰和雷·博尔格的妆容;随后接手的是维克多·弗莱明,弗莱明拍摄了影片的大多部分,直到他因《乱世佳人》而退出;最后,金·维多拍摄了剩余的场景。另外,制片人茂文·勒鲁瓦也曾在过渡期客串导演。
片中大法师的角色最初是为W.C.菲尔兹(W.C.Fields)所写。制片人茂文·勒鲁瓦希望由艾德·温(Ed Wynn)来扮演,但被其拒绝。米高梅的亚瑟·弗里德(Arthur Freed)则希望找到菲尔兹,支付给他75000美元的片酬,而菲尔兹想要10万。后来菲尔兹的经纪人在信中说道,菲尔兹拒绝片约是因为要着手创作《You Can't Cheat an Honest Man》的剧本。
雷·博尔格起初应该扮演锡皮人,但他执意要演稻草人,因为他的偶像Fred Stone曾在1902年的舞台上扮演过稻草人。而巴迪·埃布森(Buddy Ebsen)是最初扮演稻草人的人选,两人只好对调,但埃布森因锡皮人化妆用的铝粉发生了过敏反应,只好放弃表演。事实上,Fred Stone确实曾为扮演稻草人的人选,但当时他已经65岁,实在无法胜任这个角色。
最初,制片方曾打算将女巫打扮成妖冶的美丽女子,制片人茂文·勒鲁瓦请来米高梅的大美女盖尔·桑德迦(Gale Sondergaard)扮演,但这位性感女巫的出现让故事情节出现了漏洞,无奈之下,必须将女巫的形象改得丑陋不堪,而发现自己面目全非的桑德迦拒绝扮演这个角色。最终,玛格丽特·汉密尔顿(Margaret Hamilton)接替了她。
